Courtyard by Marriott, Charlottesville, VA
Situated in the heart of historic Charlottesville near the University of Virginia, this property contextually blends with surrounding buildings while adhering to the Marriott’s basic requirements.
To preserve spaces, neighborhoods and districts reflective of the city’s history, the Charlottesville Board of Architectural Review maintains strict design guidelines indicative of the Jeffersonian architecture used throughout the school grounds, a distinct variance from the hotel’s standard facade. The hotel’s exterior design successfully replicates this architecture through strategic application of brick veneer and precast concrete, yet is modernized with an aluminum window system and one-story entrance canopy.
The resulting 137-room property is multi-faceted: it meets the Courtyard by Marriott’s traditional design, features modern elements, fulfills the city’s guidelines by mingling into the surrounding architecture and maximizes site yield.
