NTELOS Pavilion at Harbor Center
Rising dramatically alongside the Elizabeth River, the skyline of downtown Portsmouth, Virginia, has been transformed with the addition of this 6,500-seat outdoor performance venue that hosts national and regional performers.
The center’s dramatic focal point, a tensioned-membrane roof, is contemporary yet symbolic. As an icon, it suggests the sailing vessels in the harbor amd signifies the progressive revitalization of downtown Portsmouth. The roof provides cover to 3,500 seats without the use of columns, allowing optimum sight lines from any view.
Serving as an architectural landmark, this performing arts center’s impact is twofold. It fills a previously void niche for a 5,000 – 7,000-person site that features a variety of performers, and is projected to attract a quarter million people annually to downtown Portsmouth, significantly contributing to current economic revitalization efforts.
