The Norva Theater
Contributing to the newly revitalized downtown district of Norfolk, VA, this award-winning venue is an increasingly popular stop for national performers on tour. Built in 1913 as a vaudeville theater/movie house, the 45,000 SF building was renovated into three distinct spaces – a 1,500-person concert hall, a music-themed restaurant, and an administrative and back-of-house area.
Client goals were to provide an intimate venue that would enhance musical performances, incorporate the architecture as a vital part of the musical experience, and thematically integrate the restaurant with the theater. The stage was designed so every spot in the house has a great view. Theater structural details carry forward an industrial theme – expanded steel guardrails, antique oak and stained concrete floors, steel partitions, and fiberglass column covers painted to look like turn-of-the-century cast iron columns.
Since its inception in 2000, the NorVa has become a central hot spot of activity in downtown Norfolk.
