South Retail Shell Building, The Town Center of Virginia Beach
This two-story, 42,000 SF structure evokes the sentiment of a small town, despite its location within Virginia’s largest city. The “Main Street” style design avoids a plain box look through a fusion of materials, textures and colors, creating the illusion of different commercial establishments within one block.
The first section, currently home to the national restaurant chain California Pizza Kitchen, utilizes red brick with pre-cast accents and operable second-level French doors. The center portion changes to a light-colored pre-cast concrete patterned with numerous reveals and antiqued light fixtures. The third section is columned with red brick and light pre-cast concrete, features arched windows, decorative medallions and roofline pilasters, and employs a turret that serves as a focal point.
A mixture of building materials, architectural details and lighting elements successfully creates individuality for tenants and adds to the Town Center’s village atmosphere.
