U.S. Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria, Europe
CMSS designed this new embassy to incorporate a blend of modern U.S. diplomatic design as well as both contemporary and classic Bulgarian architecture.
The façade features contrasting patterns of regional stones that create intricate designs evocative of the local culture. An interior ceremonial hall and its adjacent outdoor terrace overlook picturesque Mount Vitosha. Walls are clad in limestone and wood paneling and the floor is a tri-stone pattern reminiscent of traditional Bulgarian design.
Multiple government-sanctioned security measures instituted to protect the complex from potential physical, biological and technological assaults were embedded within the architecture and landscaping to avoid a fortress image. Additionally, the embassy is poised to receive LEED™-certification for the incorporation of sustainable design elements.
