Sandler Center for the Performing Arts
The Sandler Center provides the city with a new community theater and fills the region’s need for a mid-size, professional-quality venue. CMSS (with Philip Johnson • Alan Ritchie, consulting architect for interior architecture) created a multi-purpose facility that intimately connects with its urban surroundings and ignites public enthusiasm for the arts.
The architecturally dynamic center features a three-story, 110-foot-wide, luminous glass façade that wraps the front of the 86,000 SF building and reveals a grand lobby within. The 1,200-seat theater was designed to maximize sightlines, accommodate a variety of performance types, create an intimate performance space, and produce the best acoustical results possible. Sinuous forms within the theater serve as acoustical elements, and represent ocean waves, symbolic of the city’s character.
The iconic Sandler Center has become the city’s showcase for cultural arts. When there is a performance, the marquee “lantern” tower glows, beckoning the community to gather, enjoy the spectacle, and mix with the energy of the city center.
